New Evidence for the Management of Hypertension, the Kidney and Cardiovascular Complications

Milan, Italy

We welcome you to this webcast, which presents the symposium - New Evidence for the Management of Hypertension, the Kidney and Cardiovascular Complications - recorded at the European Society of Hypertension, 2007.

Hypertension plays a pivotal role in the development of cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases. Consequently, striving for effective blood pressure control is fundamental in the management of the hypertensive patient. As new management strategies are being developed it should be acknowledged that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can be a useful predictor of risk and so hypertension assessment should no longer be restricted to office (clinic)-based measurements. In addition, realistic blood pressure targets should be set. When considering the contribution of hypertension to total cardiovascular and renal risk, the additional and unique benefits that some anti-hypertensives (such as agents that act on the renin-angiotensin system) can offer must be taking into account.

The new ESH/ESC revised guidelines will help broaden the approach to current hypertension management. Furthermore, the ONgoing Telmisartan Alone in combination with Ramipril Global Endpoint Trial (ONTARGETTM) will provide important information on the ability of the combination of telmisartan and ramipril to enhance cardio- and renal protection beyond blood pressure control in patients at high risk.
