Tackling the Renal Continuum: New Data, New Prospects

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

We welcome you to this webcast, which presents the symposium - Tackling the Renal Continuum: New Data, New Prospects - recorded at The World Congress of Nephrology, 2007.

An early stage of the renal continuum is endothelial dysfunction, characterized by impaired nitric oxide activity, the initiation of atherosclerotic disease and associated vascular remodelling within the kidneys. Without effective renoprotection, incipient nephropathy, which manifests as microalbuminuria, develops. This is followed by overt nephropathy with macroalbuminuria and a decline in the glomerular filtration rate. Eventually, end-stage renal disease, requiring haemodialysis or renal replacement therapy to ensure patient survival, will occur. At each stage of the renal continuum, the risk of cardiovascular events is also increased.

Targeting the renin-angiotensin system using an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) not only controls blood pressure, but also protects against the detrimental effects of angiotensin II within the kidneys and the cardiovascular system.

The ONgoing Telmisartan Alone in combination with Ramipril Global Endpoint Trial (ONTARGET) will provide important information on the ability of the combination of ARB telmisartan and the ACE inhibitor ramipril to enhance cardio- and renal protection beyond blood pressure control in patients at high risk.
