New Approaches in Cardio & Vascular Protection: Dual Renin-Angiotensin System Blockade
Vienna, Austria
It is well established that angiotensin II (a key mediator of the renin angiotensin system [RAS]) is linked to the development of both acute cardiovascular events and chronic cardiovascular damage and disease. Previous studies in heart failure have shown that the addition of an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) to standard background therapy can improve cardiovascular endpoints, including death. It is possible that dual RAS blockade may be of particular benefit to a high-risk population, including those patients with multiple risk factors. The landmark ONgoing Telmisartan Alone and in combination with Ramipril Global Endpoint Trial (ONTARGETTM) Programme, which has enrolled more than 31,000 patients with a broad range of cardiovascular diseases, will provide the opportunity to establish the benefits of dual protection using telmisartan and ramipril in a high-risk population.
