TRANSCEND®

TRANSCEND® and the parallel, principal ONTARGET® trial are studies within The ONTARGET® Trial Programme – a landmark trial in cardiovascular protection.1

Like its sister trial, TRANSCEND® includes the broadest cross-section of patients with high-risk cardiovascular disorders ever studied in a clinical trial setting.

TRANSCEND® aims to investigate the effects of the ARB telmisartan versus placebo in patients intolerant of ACE inhibitors but at high risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death or hospitalization for congestive heart failure.

The rationale behind the trial is that long-term ACE inhibition can be associated with tolerability issues in some patients.2 ARBs may be better tolerated than ACE inhibitors. Therefore, the TRANSCEND® study enrolled patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors but at high risk of a cardiovascular event.

The results from TRANSCEND® are expected to complement the ONTARGET® study findings.
