New standards in protecting high-risk patients: learnings from the ONTARGET® programme

The ONTARGET® Trial Programme is the largest cardiovascular clinical investigation ever undertaken with an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and has gained a lot of attention since the initial presentation of its results on March 2008 at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in Chicago.
The aim of the first of two Boehringer Ingelheim and Bayer Schering Pharma satellite symposia, entitled “New standards in protecting high-risk patients: learning from the ONTARGET® programme”, was to further evaluate the ONTARGET® trial results and their implications on daily clinical practice.
During this first satellite symposium, international experts from Canada, France, UK and Germany presented new insights from the ONTARGET® trial providing evidence for protection of patients of high cardio and vascular risk. The symposium was chaired by Professors Faiez Zannad (France) and Salim Yusuf (Canada).
