Baseline Characteristics
Baseline demographic characteristics and medical history of the patients in the ONTARGET® and TRANSCEND® studies were similar to those of patients in the HOPE study – reflecting a study population who are at high risk of a cardiovascular event, but with their blood pressure in the ‘normal’ range.1
However, patients in the ONTARGET® and TRANSCEND® studies demonstrated greater ethnic diversity, were slightly older and had greater frequencies of hypertension and cardiovascular disease than those who participated in the HOPE study.1
Baseline medication use in the ONTARGET® and TRANSCEND® study populations revealed current treatment practice:
- Use of beta-blockers or lipid-lowering therapy was higher in the ONTARGET® and TRANSCEND® studies than in the HOPE study.1
- Almost 60% of the ONTARGET® and TRANSCEND® population had already received ACE inhibitors, whereas in the HOPE study the use of ACE inhibitors was negligible.1
- A high proportion of the study population in the ONTARGET® Trial Programme was receiving antihypertensive medications – a significant proportion of these were for secondary prevention rather than blood pressure control.1
